Port Replicators and Docking Stations

In my search for a laptop, I keep coming across things like "serial, parallel and usb available through port replicator". Sometimes, they'll say enhanced port replicator and sometimes, they'll say docking station. Clearly, this means that the laptop doesn't have the ports built-in but what do these things look like? Do they just plug into a socket on the computer, do I have to put the computer in some kind of cradle or large thing or do they just clip on the back? Will Windows see the ports as native or will I need drivers for the replicator? What about DOS? I find it odd, especially on the 12 and 13 inch models, to see things like that, and I'd prefer native ports/slots, but if I come across a good laptop with these options, I don't want to miss out on it.
